Not sure which thread to use? Don't need it to be a conversation?
This one's for you
I just looked at the underwhelming partial eclipse through squinted eyes and survived.
Also, we're off to a festival tomorrow and it will be 36 degrees when we arrive. I'm in the 'special' field as I'm still on crutches. Viewing platforms FTW!

Re: The 'Say Something' thread
Great idea for a thread Lorraine (I cannot find an emoticon that suits that doesn't look sarcastic).
If you've got me on fb you'll know but I have recently discovered making seitan and I am having very mixed feelings about it. It's great, and in theory saves me money buying ready to eat products, but;

- It makes a damn mess. Whitewash-like substance everywhere!

Also apparently I cannot figure out how to do bulletpoints on this platform.

Did you know you can just buy Vital Wheat Gluten to save having to do the washed flour method?Sugarmouse wrote: Thu Aug 13, 2026 12:45 pm

I tried the washing method once and decided to never bother again.

I do, but I just figured that that just means someone else is wasting a load of water rather than me using it on the garden!Lorraine wrote: Thu Aug 13, 2026 1:10 pmDid you know you can just buy Vital Wheat Gluten to save having to do the washed flour method?Sugarmouse wrote: Thu Aug 13, 2026 12:45 pm

I haven't yet found out where I would buy it from. I am guessing if I was going to buy it, I may as well just buy other ready-made products? Or am I missing something?
It is SUCH a faff isn't it. Makes such a mess, so much potential waste. My kitchen looked like it had been whitewashed the first time I did it.

I'm sure I saw somebody make something else out of the waste water, but can't think what it was now.Sugarmouse wrote: Tue Aug 18, 2026 12:17 pmI do, but I just figured that that just means someone else is wasting a load of water rather than me using it on the garden!Lorraine wrote: Thu Aug 13, 2026 1:10 pmDid you know you can just buy Vital Wheat Gluten to save having to do the washed flour method?Sugarmouse wrote: Thu Aug 13, 2026 12:45 pm

It is a good way to make use of that water though, putting it on the garden.
Another 'did you know'? You really need to use strong bread flour as regular flour doesn't have enough protein in. When I looked at how much seitan you could make from one bag of bread flour, I decided it wasn't cost effective and just bought vital wheat gluten instead. I've bought it from Amazon and Whole Foods online.
Have you tried making tofu yet? I used to, and will again I'm sure. It takes time and strong hands but the flavour was gorgeous. I would eat it raw dipped in soy sauce.
I even tried Tempeh. That's a pain in the arse, needing the correct starter bacteria, the exact right temperature and plastic bags with holes in. I've decided I don't like it anyway, even the shop bought one.
Oh, soya yoghurt I've made too. Bleurgh. I'll stick to Alpro. They know what they're doing, haha.

I've tried a couple of recipes for the waste water and none worked. In fairness they were from dubious resources (things my friend found on tiktok mainly)!Lorraine wrote: Tue Aug 18, 2026 1:40 pmI'm sure I saw somebody make something else out of the waste water, but can't think what it was now.Sugarmouse wrote: Tue Aug 18, 2026 12:17 pmI do, but I just figured that that just means someone else is wasting a load of water rather than me using it on the garden!Lorraine wrote: Thu Aug 13, 2026 1:10 pm

I am not sure, with the garden because apparently the sugars can encourage mould. Which makes sense. My Mum saw the state of my kitchen and suggested that I make it outside using the hosepipe. Which I did, and then she complained about the mess in the garden
I get about 4 portions (which last about 2 days while I am training every day) from one bag of bread flour. Which is about £1.50. So more cost effective than (for example) buying some faux chicken from aldi which is two portions for £2. And I do love cooking, and of course you can add your own favoured flavourings. I will see where I can get VWG from.
I have only tried tempeh twice, for some reason I thought that sounded easier than tofu because it is less processing, but I accept I could be wrong. I've never tried making either. Do you have a favourite tofu recipe? I do have strong hands thankfully (blame the pole for that)!
I never use soy yogurt so you've sufficiently put me off even trying to make that!

I'll take a photo of my tofu recioe later for you. My Mum's Sister is over from the states next week and we're all going on a minibreak together (that's me, her, Mum and my sister). I would ordinarily take at least one full week off work when my Aunt visits, but I haven't this year after they left me out of two things they did last year, let me down on a visit to me etc and as they have form for this, I've decided enough is enough.
I think they're close-knit as the three of them as I came along so much later, my Mum had my Sister young so they've all grown together of sorts. I am glad I've realised now.
