Go on then matey. Do 'King For A Day', click on my House on Fire sig. :)
I used to be in a band you know. A rock band of sorts, but with a definite indie leaning. On the rare occasions that we were sober, I'm sure that more than one of us shared a vision of producing something powerful, warm and tight, like a vagina with all its inherent appeal, but made of music not pink flesh. I'm not sure we ever achieved that goal, but House on Fire have done it for us, so we can rest easy.
Straight from the get go, King for a Day is a healthy smack in the face fit to banish sleep - a classic riff which says 'pay f*cking attention' and on first listen I was more than happy to oblige. That the track almost immediately drops into a verse made of jelly-tot sweetness is not to its detriment, though admittedly the crustiest of metallers may perhaps go cold at the lack of roaring and sheep-heads. For me this only brings the hook and choruses into sharper relief and adds to their effectiveness.
To play a comparison game, my dilettante knowledge tells me this is a sweet blend of Pearl Jam and Audioslave, evidenced in the direct guitar riff, the close vocal harmonies and the crisp drummery - I could be wrong in that comparison, but the band can take heart from the fact that the average Dave on the street, should he be presented with a track from each of the three bands concerned, would have no qualms in saying that there is nothing to distinguish between them in terms of quality, or performance, or even production.
If there is a fault, it's that the song title is perhaps a bit of a cliche and that stylistically speaking this is nothing groundbreaking, but so what. What is these days? Not much, that's what, and when there's nothing groundbreaking about, how do we judge this kind of artistic output? By execution, commitment and gut reaction. Badabing times three. I'm not a massive rock fan, but I am a fan of this.
My scoring sytem for reviews is legendary. For this track I am going to award a DIDN'T EXPECT IT TO SOUND QUITE SO PRO award, because I didn't expect it to sound quite so pro. There's only two tracks on the myspace currently, but I'm interested to hear more.
Take that, dance music. Dave is being wooed to the slightly dark side. lol.
Well done chaps. A fine piece of work.
