exactly, he wasnt even the first off the blocks! he was showboating like 10, maybe 15 metres from the line, no one can touch this guy, at least until they allow steroid use into the olympics, which i dont think will be too far away.
i think he could easily get to about 9.5, maybe even 9.3 if he pushed it hard. he was even leaning backwards at the end! this guys legendary. i wonder how long before the rumours start about him being juiced, that would suck.
that was amazing. absolutely unreal.

Sadly, that did occur to me at one point, then I felt bad for being cynical.
He's running in the 200 as well... Michael Johnson's record on the line...

absolutely, this is like the Ultimate Olympic Event, and hes walked it. hes well tall for a sprinter too, so it makes it even more unbelievable.
im literally in shock at this. like the commentator said, "michael phelps, who?"
just looked on his Wiki page. someone had edited it to say he stops half-way to masturbate and ejacuates over the line. I then pressed f5 and it had been put right.

Heh heh, watching Michael Johnson's reaction to Phelps being called the "greatest olympian" in the past few days was comedy. He seemed genuinely offended that anyone would compare swimming to athletics.
But seriously, Bolt. Just absolute sheer class.

im not putting all my money on it or anything, but i think MJ's record on the 200 is going to be broken this time round.
i mean, i dont want to take anything away from phelps or anything, but the 100 metre sprint was, i believe, the only event in the very first olympic games. everything else got added in later. to win the 100 metre sprint is like being the champion of ALL of the olympics, regardless of how many medals people get in other events.
things like sailing and equestrian can **** off.

pretty much true. the papers wont care about swimming medals- its all about the 100m sprint.

I don't see the point in banning performance-enhancing drugs. Isn't that the point of the Olympics, to use the human body to its full potential?

its to set a benchmark. if one person uses roids, another uses something else more effective and so on. if you ban the use of drugs, you ensure that only training and commitment is the deciding factor in a race. all the supplements and stuff these guys take can be naturally found in foods, its just easier to take them in powder form sometimes.

no, as far as i understand it, the sprint was the first game. mind you, the olympics* used to be a yearly event i think, might have even been more than that. considering how greek cultures worked, i wouldnt be surprised if the whole thing cam eabout by accident. you know., athenians, run the fastest and celebrate, so the spartans come over and say "yeah, so what we could whup you at wrestling" etc.
like i said, its only as far as i believe. i think i read it somewhere in a book on the history of competetive sports. mind you, it could have been a ladybird book, so not sure. anyways, its a fair assumption to say that the 100m sprint is the event that sums up the olympics.
why do you always say that anything i post is bollocks?
*edit; its fair to say that competitions like this were going on long before they were organised into an "olympic" event. trials between soldiers were common anyway.

The ancient Olympic Games began in the year 776 BC, when Koroibos, a cook from the nearby city of Elis, won the stadion race, a foot race 600 feet long.

EDIT

http://www.olympic.org/uk/games/ancient/events_uk.asp says you're right, although that was for the games that had become a regular event. And equestrian sports were included in the original games, too, apparently.

they were greek. bumming boys probably featured in the events. doesnt make it any more reasonable.
besides, prancing around on a horse while wearing a ****ing butler outfit hardly compares to charging around on a mighty warhorse.

I wouldn't say cross country is prancing. That prancing anyway is extremely difficult btw.

Reading back over drpurple's last few posts, all I can see as the logical endpoint is that at some stage in the next few posts he's going to insist that his hair is a bird and he has a windmill in his beard and therefore all other arguments are invalid.

Ugh, it's really not like that at all. Can't compare riding to HTML, it's ****ing knackering for a start ;) course it counts as a sport, there's so much more to it when you know what it's about. The looking pretty is full of different moves, paces, getting those moves right IN different paces, making it look effortless is half the point in dressage. Getting ONE of the laterals right that you'll see at olympic level takes a ridiculous amount of skill, time and practice, nevermind putting a load of them together.
If you look at the 3 day eventing as well, there's getting that right - then showjumping which is also a thousand times more complicated than pointing a horse at a jump, and cross country which is quite frankly terrifying!

I thought the worst Olympic games was when Nero went over and won all the golds, on the grounds that he was emperor and nobody else was.
Anyone talking about ridiculous sports in the olympics today should bear in mind that "poetry reading" was one of the competitions back in Nero's day.

dont get me wrong, im not saying that the older events were only better, im suggesting that there are a shit load of superfluous events that mean nothing in todays world. ping pong? wtf? yes, its tiring, yes it takes skill, but like ive said previously in another thread, if i cant see the gods on mount olympus doing it, i cant agree that its an olympic sport.
