Prescott was on C4news the other day debating about this with a guy who works for said "Think tank".

he absolutely destroyed the nerd in question.

tories. what else do you expect from them? they'd prefer the north didn't exist...Cameron is on a damage limitation exercise - alienating the whole of the North probably would not be a good vote winner!

...Although it has been argued that it could help the Tories: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/aug/15/regeneration.conservatives

I plan to move to London, and then I will vote Tory at the next election. ;) :D

The North is never going to swing from Labour to Tory with that kind of rhetoric.

Cameron was in my office yesterday. Man he's a smarmy looking bastard in the flesh.

Yeah. He came in for a mini interview for the website and paper. Afterwards he toured the office (well, he walked about 10 feet, spoke to 1 person then buggered off), and asked the obligatory "So what do you do?" question. You could see in his head he was just going "Bla bla bla".

Or maybe I am looking at it in a too biased manner myself?

It said people in some northern towns and cities face a "simple" and "bleak" choice – either move to the "economic powerhouse" of London and the South East or suffer unemployment or lower wages.

Or there's another choice and one much preferable to moving to bloody London. Get the **** out the country.

Looks to me like excluding the urban centers that the North of England is pretty evenly divided

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/vote2005/flash_map/html/map05.stm

However all this report had done is repeat the tossers who say "Move to London, you earn more" without 1st thinking that they'll spend 2 or 3 times the amount on living costs. I wouldn't even want to know the actual figure of a 2 bed house with garden next to a canal or similar in London and environs.

oh, and Cameron is a odious cockend.

That's why I said outside of the Urban centers. Large cities and town invariably vote for labour MPs. Rural is normally Conservative. Not a hard rule, but it's decent enough for the purposes here. The fact is that Labour wouldn't have won any elections for many years if they hadn't got such a strong hol don southern scotland. IIRC Labour themselves have _never_ had a majority if you exclude the Scottish constituencies.

No-one is worrying about the Yorkshire Dales or the Lake District - almost Tory heartlands.

South Lakes was Tim Collins until he lost his seat to a Lib-Dem in 2005 (drb probably loves that). He's taken another safe seat, but the swing was surprising at the time. However there are reasonably sure it'll swing back again in 2009/2010.

he absolutely destroyed the nerd in question. That bloke apparently works at my university - but not in the housing and regeneration field (so I don't know him) - where it is fair to say most of the staff would disagree with him. I bet he is deservedly getting some ear ache! :D

Doubt it. My former constituancy. Tim Farron has done more for Kendal in 6 years as an MP than the Tories did in 40.

Yeah, but he has alienated a lot of people outside of the larger towns. You know, the old ladies and old farts who have seen no improvements or changes in their service. The ones who make a point of voting every year because they have absolutely nothing better to do.

The official website has put up a bit of a garbled clearance on his part, claiming he didn't say what he did. A classic way to deny something you actually did say. To be fair, I don't know how anyone could be offended by what he said, it seemed more in good humour than anything! Sure, he may not have been spot on about the railway thing, but he was right about the English lifestyle and the rain! If anything, it should be a compliment, because he said the English were hard-working people!

If it was'nt for cotton, few people would live around here to be honest.
