Which events will you all be watching?
I will probably watch:
Diving - it looks nice
Weightlifting - it looks dangerous
Gymnastics - it never fails to impress me. Go Beth Tweddle!
Basketball - I am very excited by the prospect of Kobe and Lebron being in the same team. Go USA!

I'll probably watch most of it as I'm not working atm. The track and field events are the 'proper' lympics in my view but I'll also be watching any sports that we've got a decent chance in like cycling, swiming, diving, rowing and sailing.
Does anyone know if Murray's competing in the tennis? He's 6th in the world now and as most tennis players don't take the lympics seriously he should have a chance of a medal.
I'll be honest. I'm just hoping for lots of footage of the stadiums.

Bit of a wait though until Vancouver in 2010!

Cheers, caught up on the story now. So they will have 4 there after all. All sorts of stuff has been going on in Iraq with a previous olympic committee being kidnapped. Lots of athletes being murdured (including the whole of the Tae Kwon Do team). The female sprinter had to re-locate to the north of the country after being shot at whilst training in Baghdad and the rowers were navigating dead bodies floating in the river!
I usually like to watch the teams walk past to see who has the smallest team. Any single person teams so far?

What have you got against curling?
I just don't think it's particularly amazing that people who devote their whole life to getting good at doing one thing can get really good at it. It's more interesting when they then have to interact with other people also doing that thing, in cooperation and/or opposition
I don't have any problem with people wanting to get into athletics and archery and weightlifting and shotput and whatever. I just don't think we should be funding them huge amounts of money to do so
I'm not even saying that money shouldn't be spent on sports. I just think it would be much better used to help create facilities and events for stuff that the majority of kids would actually take part in

i agree for the most part, particularly about the funding. it goes against the very roots of the olympics.
against curling, you ask? like i said, i dont like the idea that something can be considered a sport if one cant see gods on mount olympus doing it.
darts? not a sport.
snooker? not a sport.
curling? not a sport.
rifle/air rifle? not a sport. (imho)
driving a car? not a sport.
they all take a massive amount of skill and dedication, but they shouldnt be considered an olympic sport in my eyes.
and i think the olympics should solely be about individual sportsmen and wimmin. the whole point of the olympics was to find the greatest athlete in the greek area, who would be fit to stand amongst the gods on mount olympus. i cant see zeus bestowing a ribbon upon the head of the wimmins beach volleyball team, but i can see atlas giving the weightlifting champion a curt nod of respect. make sense? thought not.

It'd all be much more fun if they were allowed to take drugs. I have no truck with these whiney bastards going "ooooh, level playing field, role models, blah blah..." Point one, there's no level playing field when our guy has £250 trainers and a lottery-funded nutritionist, and Surinam's guy has a pair of flip-flops I donated to Oxfam. Point two, they're not role models, kids do not base their lifestyle choices on Someone Who Is Good At Throwing Javelins. Point three, if it's a thrill to see someone run 100m in 9 seconds, it must be way more of a thrill to see them run it in 7, even if they are on so many drugs that their piss can fuel a Volvo.

Britain has been prevented from entering because the four home countries - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - compete separately in other international matches.
There would have to be a changing in the rules for us to enter.

Alas, I must disagree. I found it superb from the start. Never thought I'd be up at 3 finding women's taekwondo or the team table tennis or competitive swimming much of a draw...but it was :)
The BBC did us proud, and us pro-licence fee payers the world of good, by showing so much across all platforms, without asking for any extra money. Their online service was superb.
As for the Great Britain Football team, wll the only parallel I can draw is our hockey team. It flies the flag for "Great Britain" but is almost entirely English.

Was Jackie Chan singing on the closing ceremony yesterday? :)
And too, We will have a football team, it'll probably just not include Scotland, they said the other day about the need to 'protect the future of Scottish football' and instead of us all joining up together as one nation, we should compete against eachother in a home nations play-off with the winning representing us as the British team. I lol'd, nulifies the whole point of being in a team.
BTW Sepp Blatter has already said, a GB footy team wouldn't affect any future international football in terms of Scotland, Wales, N.Ireland & England entering competitions as themselves so i can't see Scotland's problem other than they are worried they'll be hardly represented in the side, well tough shit, get better at football.
Tbh i hope we go ahead with it and Scotland are excluded on the basis of their FA being a shower of wankers.

...women's boxing. The IOC has finally decided that there is enough structure and organisation to allow women's boxing as a full Olympic discipline.

There are a couple of young Welsh lads who might even deserve their place rather than being token additions (like Healy).
Fergie as manager, Beckham as assistant.

I just think there's bigger sports to add than Women's boxing. Sure, it's a honourable sport to be a part of, not denying that but following the (wrongful) exclusion of Baseball, they should be incorporating a sport what can really boost the Olympics another level. I think Rugby could do this no problem, Cricket is a contender and so is Darts but for me Rugby ultimately would make people tune in and turn up to see it.

i dont see it as adding another sport. i see it as an overdue inclusion of women into a sport that already exists. hell, women compete in taekwondo, and in wrestling (iirc), why not boxing? its retarded.
adding rugby would be good too, but it would end up being too regimented. its a rough sport as it is, and unless there were changes to the rules...i dont see it happening.
