HED's Weekender is upon us. :)

A special full weekend of events on August 15th, 16th and 17th!

Each day we have a different special guest out of town act - The Brute Chorus (from London), Gideon Conn (from Manchester) and Wave Pictures (from London).

Check out these videos...

The Brute Chorus (http://www.bbc.co.uk/glastonbury/2008/artists/brutechorus/) (Live at Glastonbury '08)
Gideon Conn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuJLseL-Iic) (Live on Channel M )
Wave Pictures (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSKeUoCpXeI) (Brand New Video for 'Just Like A Drummer')

And surrounding them we have a whole swathe of local bands of all styles and genres. A real 'carnival' of music so to speak. :)

And best of all - the three events are all free entry!

FRIDAY AUGUST 15TH @ KOLOR BAR
THE BRUTE CHORUS (http://www.myspace.com/thebrutechorus) (from London)
THE UNCOMFORTABLES (http://www.myspace.com/theuncomfortables)
VENCIDOS (http://www.myspace.com/losvencidos)
MINDSHOCK (http://www.myspace.com/mindshockuk)

Doors: 8.00pm / Entry: Free

"The Brute Chorus convened as a four-piece in Greenwich from the far reaches of the West Country - they are nothing if not a mutant bunch playing bastardised indie rock. Originally Beefheart but most recently it's probably The Boggs who gave bands the credence to lift from folk and blues and to mangle into something altogether more aggressive and contemporary. In London The Mules have made a start and now, with their debut single 'Chateau' / 'The Cuckoo & The Stolen Heart' The Brute Chorus have radicalised genres. Offering a psyched-out garage-folk of dirty, scuzzy guitar licks and a mixed bag of accompanying instruments and a scatology of Biblical stories, nursery rhymes and fairy tales. Perhaps for those of you with memories of the great Violent Femmes." Artrocker

"The Brute Chorus are like being whipped with barbed bass strings and having the wounds rubbed laudanum laden goose fat. They are one of those extremely rare outfits that stir the loins as much as the synapses. Children in the tinny grip of sherbet shock will explode in delight as the Brute Chorus pop-flak slice n dices them, while chin-stroking forty-something mores will make convincing cases for the immobilized hipsters. Why? This is class, that’s it." Unpeeled Magazine

SATURDAY AUGUST 16TH @ MAD FERRET
SPOKES (http://www.myspace.com/spokessound)
MYTH OF UNITY (http://www.myspace.com/mouuk)
GIDEON CONN (http://www.myspace.com/gideonconn) (from Manchester)
MR + MRS (http://www.myspace.com/mrandmrsmusic)
BIKINI BLACK SPECIAL (http://www.myspace.com/bikiniblack)
IVAN CAMPO (http://www.myspace.com/ivancampo)
PENCIL IN (http://www.myspace.com/pencilin)
BOBBIE PERU (http://www.myspace.com/bobbieperu) (from Manchester)
SILICON TALENT (http://www.myspace.com/silicontalent)
THE CITIES (http://www.myspace.com/thecities)
THE HOUSEWIVES (http://www.myspace.com/hellohousewives) (from London)
STEPHEN BUCKLEY and The Feverdreamers (http://www.myspace.com/smallscreendramaqueen)

Doors: 2.00pm / Entry: Free

"Gideon Conn gave us evidence of his ascendancy, showing his musical versatility, he blended folk-tinged hip-hop with jazzy skiffle, while all the time using his deadpan delivery to augment his often-hilarious couplets. He provides a unique style that can be best described as hip-hop to those who don’t like hip-hop." gigwise.com

"Half Games Workshop team leader, half Louis Theroux ' Conn has a striking and eye-catching stage presence and delivery. "The Band Will Find A Way Into Your Heart" is a clever take of De La Soul's 3's The Magic Number, while "Once Upon A Time In The West" (inspired by a 'thoroughly enjoyable' bank holiday viewing of the Henry Fonda classic western) is a woozy epic which rises and falls over a trombone accompaniment." Manchester Evening News

SUNDAY AUGUST 17TH @ MAD FERRET
JELLYS LAST JAM (http://www.myspace.com/jellyslastjam)
WAVE PICTURES (http://www.myspace.com/thewavepictures) (from London)
CHARLIES HERO (http://www.myspace.com/charlieshero)
NEW ZEALAND STORY (http://www.myspace.com/newzealandstoryuk)
ROO WALKER (http://www.myspace.com/mrroowalker)

Doors: 8.00pm / Entry: Free

"The Wave Pictures are shorn of a larger audience by both the rain and clashes with Blondie and Black Lips, but those who huddle at the front of the Lake Stage watching are treated to what is surely one of the festival highlights. ‘Long Island’ is an early triumph, fired off by a supremely confident band. Confident enough to throw together lines like: “I was an auto-focus illuminator-flash-gun in aqua-marine biology blue / Spitting out prints I printed you on photon quality glossily-greasy-chip-paper with a tortilla dip chaser / and then later / I pinned you down.” It’s flash wordplay but without sounding forced or detracting from the power-pop magic on which the words sit. In Dave Tattersall there is also a guitar hero spilling out; blazing solos fly out of songs where before there was none, indicative of a band honed by years on the road, and yet they are still one that retains a twinkling wryness - also the product of those years... spent kicking against things. Understated brilliance." Drowned In Sound (review of Latitude Festival, 2008)

A bit of extra information about The Housewives...

"Their unique sound stems from a slightly drunken decision to play music which draws on Indie, Latin and Drum n’ Bass influences (I know what you’re thinking – don’t think that). It’s an eclectic mix, but it works phenomenally well. If you can imagine Jeff Buckley salsa dancing at a drum n’ bass night whilst members of the Young Knives look on, you’re probably somewhere close to what the Housewives have achieved." - Artrocker Magazine

Not that it matters because I am working on Saturday but for future reference, are the all day things all ages?Best advice I can give is to speak to Fraze at the Ferret, cos I wouldn't want to say 'yes'.

As far as I am aware during the day up until early evening it may be possible to bring under 18's in.

But, I imagine he wouldn't want it to become a creche. I'll ask him for clarification when I see him next.

In terms of all dayers at Kolor Bar its definitly a no-go.

I enjoyed NZS quite a lot. Musically, very apt and the emphasis on traditional song-writing and development is definitely there for all to hear.

Unfortunately, I don't like vocals. I'm sorry Dave, but for me they don't work. You sound like an Elvis Presley impersonator (not an insult, just a tonal comparison). I reckon the vocal side would work magnificently with a good female voice. Apart from that, excellent stuff.

I would have liked to come but we rehomed two cats on Saturday and couldn't leave them home alone on their second night in a strange house.

Plus, Preston is a long way away.

Well, yeah. But I didn't want to be nasty. I quite like Elvis impersonators.

Well I survived... which was my main concern. ;)

Huge thanks to everyone involved. Far too many to mention.

Hope some of you had as much fun as I did.

And a special thanks to Danny and Lomax on sound. Top notch job.

Just on that one occasion. Normal service has resumed.

I had lots of fun. Except yesterday, when I wanted to sick my eyes out. Great bands though. Enjoyed NZS. :D

Last night was cool, really enjoyed Roo and NZS. My fave part was Paul casually eating a cornetto in between songs. Sorry I couldn't stick around the weekend had caught up with me.

When I read this I imagined you breaking into someone's home, stealing their cats, then breaking into someone else's home to leave them there

That's because you're an idiot. Will just accidentally let one of them escape and then didn't realise for about half an hour. Just as he opened the back door he said "she definitely won't have got out" and there she was on the bench in the back yard.

Then the kitten jumped on her and chased her around the house.

I should start my own blog detailing the trials and tribulations of my day. Oh wait, Nick's already doing that.

I've managed to convert Jasmine to proper cat foot btw. Was actually easier than I thought.
