magnolia is a great "little" movie, Happiness though i find really hard to watch. Dylan Baker is both Brilliant and thoroughly evil at the same time. one of the most underated performances i have ever seen. as a father, i find happiness possibly the hardest film to watch. Sey.Hoff is a joy in it though :-)

is there a pun intended in the x-philes comment?

OMFG. Last-but-one episode of The Wire, Season 3. Anyone who has seen it will know what I mean. Seriously? That main a character, just...dead? And it doesn't seem the kind of show to go for the "aha, that was a dream sequence/alien abduction/some other bullshit" cop-out. The more I watch this series the more I think it's The Best TV Show Ever. Dickensian in scope, Jacobean in intensity, Shakespearean in depth of character, just...The Best. At everything.

GO AND WATCH THE WIRE. ALL OF YOU. EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO BREAK THE LAW TO DO SO.

****ING IMMENSE. The whole series lead upto that. Everything. By the way, the best moment was the Avon/String talk on the terrace of Avon's apartment. That's the best example of knowing your characters that I've EVER seen on a programme.

How do you top that? Well, watch S4. It shows you more of Baltimore.

Also, I dunno if it's too soon as you haven't seen S4 (no spoilers are revealed but a couple of clips and maybe characters are on there from it), but you should check out "tapping the wire" on YouTube. It's pretty good.

*snip*

Tru all dat.

Seriously, I am notoriously hard to impress, especially when it comes to TV...IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THE WIRE, OR TRIED IT AND NOT GOT IT, DO IT OR TRY AGAIN.

It's that good. I actually find myself staring open-mouthed at the screen at just how damned good it is. There are no criteria - unless what you look for in TV is "lame-brained witless gobshitery with no content" - by which this series is not made of win. The scripts, the acting, the depth of character, the ambition of scale, the fulfilment of that ambition, the not talking down to the viewer, the avoidance of facile moral judgement, the resistance to puerile moral ambivalence...it's not just one of the best bits of TV ever. It's one of the finest works of literature ever created. If you don't like it you're a c*nt.

I resisted for quite a while, partly because so many people were raving about it, but now I've seen it I can't believe anyone's NOT watching it. It seems massively unfair on everyone who's gone to the effort of making something so good that people are, voluntarily, NOT WATCHING IT. I've actually started burning people discs of Series One (sorry Mick BTW, I have burned you it twice but both times given it away), not even asking for a blank one in return, on the grounds that spreading things this good has to, in the long run, increase the whole level of discourse and standard of life.

Kerry gives it a bit about Obama closing Guantanamo Bay, and then calls up to the camera Obama's Grand Uncle and tells about how he helped to liberate Buchenwald.

Plot aside, I thought it was ok to look at. Except towards the end when they realised that they'd failed to make a decent sci-fi and tried turning it into a horror, which still failed.

It's one of those films which could have been loads better. Or they could have used the budget and cast and made a decent film instead.

Just watched In The Name Of The King. Ever wanted to see what Dr. Uwe Boll could do with a massive budget and a handful of passable actors that ought to know better? No, me neither. It's terrible crap, but hilarious in a laugh at way and admittedly nowhere near as dire as HOTD of AITD.
