Ah the complexities of the English language. If I wasn't an ex- small time promoter you wouldn't have assumed I meant I knew them personally. Most people would read that and assume I was talking about knowing their music. I'll take your retardation into account the next time I post on here.

Underground Heroes.. brilliant! Really enjoyed them last time.

And as we're all loving the Whip, I was at Uni with Bruce, he was briefly part of a band called Slivertuna (or -tuner), who were one of the first unsigned bands to absolutely blow me away at their first gig. But he thought they were crap and left.

I've been doing this for TIME:

Chromeo
Crystal Castles
These New Puritans
Rolo Tomassi
Does It Offend You, Yeah?
The Count & Sinden
Kissy Sellout
MSTRKRFT
Ed Banger Records
MGMT
Hercules & Love Affair
Late Of The Pier
The Ghost Frequency

The venue has the ability to put these bands on now, and would pull a SHITLOAD of students.

Bands with far more publicity and media attention than those bands struggle to pull more than 100 at 53 degrees. You'd be better off putting yer money where yer mouth is and putting them on at Beats Of Rage.

Passed on your requests. We actually had a couple of these on last year, it just depends when people are touring and a lot of bands at this level would rather just do Manchester or Liverpool as their Northwest date. Will keep trying to please though.

eastern conference champions are quite superb

and MGMT are stunning. i concur they should be booked, but they've just toured and announced a later tour, so chances of them playing this year is unlikely, and by next year they;'ll be big city dates i reckon

the problem is bands and management/promotors are only now seeing the viability of preston as a good gig town. always under the shadow of Manchester/Liverpool, its tough to get bands up here. 53 had been slowly booking bigger and better bands, almost having to prove to these people over time it can be done.

but the latest listing suggests the tide is turning IMO. what i notice is bands returning for a 2nd/3rd time...this looks good to the managers etc...although the local population may cry "the Subways...again!!!!" the show will sell well and make folk take note

Chromeo ask for a LOT, more than we could afford, unless we jacked up the ticket prices considerably.

Ed Banger would depend on who you got. But that label is gold at the moment, it can do no wrong. As a student venue, that kind of night would pack it out. Trust.

Now the SU is affiliated and connected with SJM (I think it's them, right?), it can make these connections, and easily get these bands.

I just think it's a shame that with a half-decent, massive student venue, the students get to experience Hawkwind and The Lancashire Hotpots. Good and as they may be, hardly 'cutting-edge' student culture, is it?

applesandpears
26-03-2008, 02:47 PM
It think youd be suprised how difficult it is. Its not really that black and white.

Dates have to fit in with tours, venues etc not just as simple as 'theyre good- get em booked.' Youve got to get very lucky to get a band and a date that falls in to what everyone wants. Thats what Club Foot, and no doubt BOR, struggles with with touring bands.

And as has been said students (on the whole and esp. this year) are not not interested. Its a massive gamble to pay loads for these bands at the risk of losing a shag load of money. As Bard Apple suggests- if you trust then get em booked yourself- maybe at 53?

Awesome. Cheers!

Bands like Crystal Castles will be relatively cheap as well. And although I persoanlly enjoy the music, a lot of people will just go coz it's cool, and so will sell well.

And Chromeo, well, me and joe would be at the front, Air bassing!

I'm fully aware of this. I know just how difficult bands can be, and how much they make me belm when trying to fit into their schedules, and not vice versa.

There has been a number of acts we've been unable to get, purely due to the fact that our night just isn't the right date.

And special events at other venues is something we've looked at, and have been offered, and are indeed still looking at, but that will be for the future. I'm personally having too much fun booking the smaller, more exciting bands at the moment. I prefer it. Beats of Rage is more of a clubnight with bands, rather than a 'gig'.

Hmm...Nah I think yer overestimating the level of interest the students in Preston have in music. Tried and tested they just don't turn up.

Typical example...other night the highly tipped Twisted Wheel (touring with Courteeners and Rev and the Makers) played upstairs ...room was busy but soon emptied out when everyone RAN downstairs to see ....THE VENGABOYS!!

Pop, Cheese and Chart music are what the typical student wants at the moment as depressing as that is.

Hmmmm, I'd have to disagree with you on that one.

The NIGHTVISION crowd maybe did. But there are some discerning tastes in Preston. I'd like to think we draw a few of these people in with our evening.

Hot Chip was well attended, sold out in fact. I know these are a bit more pop, but if you put someone like Justice or The Ed Banger All Stars on, I think you'd be suprised as to how many tickets it sells. Especially with the current zeitgeist.

Crystal Castles also. They've got enough hype behind them to sell tickets to the students.

It's easier said than done not to play it safe. But as an SU, I think they should endeavour to. It shouldn't be a money-making exercise after all, it should be a student service.

applesandpears
26-03-2008, 03:03 PM
Exactly (to Bard Apples post)- you only have to look at the 'plastic' indie type students that frequent Roper Hall and Adelphi to see they're not bothered about discovering new acts or checking out up and coming ones.

Ive been to so many gigs at 53 where bands that would ram out Manchester and further afield (Tiny Dancers, Joe Leon, Rumble Strips etc) and have had an embassingly minimal turnout.
