View Full Version : Top 5 Hip Hop Albums of all time..
I'm excluding the Beastie Boys as they are untouchable, in my humble opinion... and instrumental hip hop.. I'm talking about 2 turntables and a microphone hip hop..
1. Nas - Illmatic
2. Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
3. A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
4. Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
5. KMD - Bl_ck B_st_rds
Other notable mentions go to: 3rd Bass - The Cactus LP, NWA - Straight Outta Compton, Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane, Snoop - Doggystyle, Mobb Deep - The Infamous..
I could go on haha!

1) raw dope posse - listen to my turbo - perhaps the greatest hip hop song i have ever heard (single only)
2) Pharoahe Monch - Desire - a cut above
3) Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back - genre bender
4) Run-DMC - Raising Hell pioneered and turned my head to "hop rap"
5) Eric B. & Rakim - Paid in Full - still listenable all the way through in 2008
Nas missed out, only to make way for THE RAW DOPE POSSE

Public Enemy seem to be on most people's lists, for good reason.
Nice to see Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy mentioned as well.
I would argue for The Roots (not sure which one - I think Game Theory showed them at their best), though technically we've moved out of "two turntables and an MC" there.
I dont know much Hip Hop. Heres some I particularly enjoy
De La Soul - 3 Feet And Rising
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation...

That cover is really unnerving. He'd tried to kill himsef but ****ed it up, but decided to use the picture as a brag - not even bullets can stop them, but only if they fire them themself. Best midget rapper ever, beats Joe C hands down.

Can't claim to have heard enough to name the top 5 of all time, but my top 5 favourites haves to be...
Souls Of Mischief - 93 'til Infinity (criminally overlooked!)
J Dilla - The Shining (At the risk of Donuts being a controversial choice for being instrumental)
Pharcyde - Labcabincalifornia
Common - Like Water For Chocolate
Black Sheep - A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing
And I really wish Crooklyn Dodgers '95 (Chubb Rock, OC and Jeru the Damaja) had done a full LP, as my favourite hip hop tune is Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers off the Clockers soundtrack
Souls Of Mischief of course.. not listened to that in time!
Could never decide on which Pharcyde album is best, but I think I lean more towards Labcabincalifornia..
Anyone listen to MF Doom?
J2TheH
18-03-2008, 09:10 PM
It's clearly Bizzarre Ride!
But luckily, I have Cydeways: The Best of, So I don't need to choose.
Oh, and WHY does it not have "Soul Flower (Remix)" on the best of?!?!
One of the happiest songs ever.
And the video to "Drop"? Don't get me started on how good that is!

If I'd done a Top 10 then MM Food and The Mouse & The Mask would probably have made it in there.
I'm surprised more people aren't on the J Dilla/Madlib tip to be honest... Champion Sound is another killer LP.

Vadim's never really clicked with me, I think it was because I was expecting it to sound more Soviet-terrifying. Pretty much I saw he was Russian and expected him to sound like the soundtrack to Red Alert.
+10 on Edan too... here's a top-of-head five:
1 - Edan - Beauty And The Beat
2 - Buck 65 - Talking Honky Blues
3 - Nas - Illmatic
4 - cLOUDDEAD - Ten
5 - Pedestrian - UnIndian Songs One
36 Chambers should probably be on there but it just doesn't work on headphones. And I've discounted instrumental stuff. And I've just realised "I'll sleep when you're dead" should be on there, but unclear where. Same for Saul Williams' ST.
BIK: You got an mp3 of that song you're pushing?

I wouldn't say I had a top 5 of the best Hip Hop albums, but most of them mentioned on this thread hit the spot!
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein. This is probably my all time favorite Hip Hop album though, so dark and the lyrics are so poetic. Def Jux is ****in smart label. I got the "Oxtrumentals" on vinyl a few years back, El-P is a legend. Wasn't too impressed with Vast Aire's and Vordul Mega's solo attempts though, but I've heard Cannibal Ox are getting back to do another album.
Can't believe no-one's mentioned Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus! "I've got darker rhymes than some niggers have got in their pigment..."
And Gil Scott Heron - "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" !
I only have Donuts by Jay Dilla, is his other stuff worth getting?

Cool I'll check it out. I thought the majority of the tracks on Dounts were just over-a-minute tracks of perfect Hip Hop production, takes several listens to notice all the intricacies of each track, something new comes up everytime I listen to it.
