Hmmm, my thread's gone, well I'll start another, simply because my new Blog's up on the Chortle website which you can read at http://blogs.chortle.co.uk/bethany

I think.

Anyway in the about me section, Erm tall, pale wtih black hair, looking like a lesbian hitler impersonater, or a lesbian sepratist bingo caller "two of the larger sisters not oppressed by a male patriarchal hegemonic model of what a woman should look like... 88."

used to temp and stuff now make a living doing other stuff which involves being funny, though that doesn't mean I'm always trying to be funny or that anything ofcfensive I say is a "bit" using that in an argument on a thread is to me tantamount to invoking godwins law and with that sentence you lose any right to continue talking to me.

Oh and tonight if Anyone's in Manchester come along and see me make a tit of myself in the Heats of the Miss gay UK competition.

I love you all.

Well that's it I've confirmed that I'm doing a one hour show for the manchester comedy festival.

It's on 29th October and it's called "Beth Becomes Her" and it's my life story told through the medium of dirty jokes.

I can't back out now it's in the brochure and I've sent the photos in.

Now all I have to do is write the bloody thing.

"Beth Becomes Her"

Pretty ace title :)

How did Miss Gay UK go??

Bethany

I didn't make it through the heats. Though as over half the judging panel worked for the rival bar to where my comedy night's on, that was to be expected, plus now that I work in showbiz (that sounds so wanky, but I can't think of a better way to describe it) it would be inappropriate for me to get through to the next round or win.

Either that or I'm one of the 14 ugliest, least charismatic and un-self confident lesbians in Manchester.

It could be either to be honest with you, especially now I've got a haircut that makes me look like a lesbian seperatist bingo caller "two of the larger sisters not confined to a patriarchal hegemonic model of feminine beauty... 88"

I spend most of my life happy these days, it's kind of hard not to really at the moment, life's good, I've got good friends, I've got a decent social life which is balancing out with work, I've got my various medical problems under control and I've started exercising regularly, I'm feeling really strong, physically and emotionally at the moment.

Hehe, there's an interview with me in this month's Diva magazine!

I'm well on the way to becomming a bona fide lesbian icon!

Plus it would appear that I've developed a fan base as I'm getting more and more kids adding me to myspace and in their general interests and heroes sections there's pictures of me and videos of me.

I'm telling you, right now it rules to be me. :D

Here we go, the Bethany Black parade marches on, I'm taking a show to Edinburgh this summer and I just got a review for my second preview show (so it's still in a very rough cut state with half of it only performed on stage for the first time whilst it was being reviewed) I've now got a director on board and I'm looking through my possibilities of which producer to go up there with.

anyway here's the review from the industry website Chortle.co.uk

How’s this for a twist on the ubiquitous dick jokes? A personal tale of how one comic lost hers. Not on the bus, obviously, but in a male-to-female sex change.

It’s an experience most people can’t begin to fathom. Some might be uncomfortable – appalled even – by the very idea. But the majority are likely to have a barrage of questions, from the curious to the prurient, none of which they could ever pose for fear of social paralysis should they ever encounter a transperson. This show, then, could truly be billed as ‘all you ever wanted to know about sex changes but were afraid to ask…’

Bethany Black proves a likeable guide through this potential minefield. She might not want this to be said: but for a lesbian, transgendered goth with a history of depression, she comes across as remarkably normal. And that’s why this show works so well – it’s not nearly as intimidating as the subject matter might suggest.

Clearly at home in her new body, Black has matter-of-fact approach to all surgical and emotional ordeal involved in turning from he to she. There’s always a deathly serious undercurrent to her tale, but it’s presented as a series of anecdotes in which Black never fails to see the funny side. The often inappropriate reaction of peripheral characters, such as her family and friends, also help jolly things along.

She has more than her share of sharply witty lines in this hour, and a personal journey that has great potential to enthral. How can you not listen in rapt attention to a tale like this? And Black can hold the room when there’s no obvious joke on the horizon.

This early performance has its flaws, in common with the other Leicester Comedy Festival shows that have their sights on the next Edinburgh Fringe, six months hence, as opposed to proven hits from last time around. But these are mainly concerned with reinforcing the structure to bring the audience along on a narrative and emotional journey. The conclusion, especially, seems rather forced and tagged-on – though you can’t deny her sincerity.

But while the show needs a cut here, and more exposition there before it hits the Scottish capital, the individual anecdotes are pitched perfectly, and even in such early days make for an engaging, and often very funny, hour from a decidedly different angle.

I've just been nominated for best Debut show at the Leicester comedy festival, plus nearly sold out my Glasgow comedy festival show.

From the List, Glasgow and Edinburgh's listing Magazine:

"The term ‘lesbian comedy’ becomes somewhat limited when applied to the array of performers who fall under that umbrella. A prime example is Manchester comedian Bethany Black, perhaps the world’s only out goth lesbian post-op male-to-female transsexual stand-up. Black feels that performing before mainstream audiences can bring about social change. After all, a well-told joke forces the audience to identify with the teller. ‘As a comedian you’ve got a great responsibility. If you can get people laughing they don’t feel threatened. Laughter can be persuasive.’

Black’s show, Beth Becomes Her, traces the comic’s story through a nervous breakdown, suicide attempts, coming out to her family as a transsexual then coming out as lesbian, having surgery and eventually finding love and acceptance. Despite the unique nature of her story, she feels it translates for mainstream audiences. ‘A number of people come away from this show with a little more understanding and a little more acceptance. If I can make one transperson’s journey a little easier then I’ve done my job.’"

I'll let y'all know when I've got my Edinburgh venue then if any of you are about you can come along :D

Well, I didn't win the Best Debut Show award at Leicester, but the Scotsman are doing a 900 word feature on me in the run up to the festival, plus out northwest did an interview with me last week.

if you want to see the show in an embrionic state come to Vanilla on 23rd June, or if You're in Brighton on 27th June come to the Komedia. Or if you're in Norwich on the 10th June, well kill yourself for being in Norwich, but first come see the extracts from the show which I will be performing at some gay arts festival or other (it's an arts festival, surely the prefix "gay" is redundant?)

Or if you're in Dublin on 6th July, come see extracts from the show at the Irish Lesbian Arts Festival.

Or if you want to help me recoup some of the £7,000 this show's costing me, then please please come to Edinburgh in August and pay for tickets to the show.

From 31st July-24th Aug (not 11)

Oh and the "I am become Beth, despoiler of girls" is the opening line of the blurb for the back of the flyer.

I've teamed up with a graffiti artist for the flyers and handed over all artistic control to them.

So far this has led me to be chased by dogs on two occasions and one near miss with some hoodlums who were up to no good.

However, the thursday morning at sun up we're doing the finishing touches to the paintwork and then the photos will be taken.

I'll post some of them up here once they're done.

Incidentally, how do we get hold of your tent so we can put it up? We are going (hopefully early!) on Sunday.

very good show miss black, have just watched you in vanilla, was very good!!! the ending was especialliay poigniant!!! (dont think that is spelt right) good luck at glasto¬!

Edit: i cant believe i posted that whilst i was still out!

The show was ace though the only picking point out the entire thing i had is where you refered to your "mimsy" as your mim or something and i thought you could have picked a much funnier word!

this is one of the strangest "stand up" shows i have ever seen but it made it all the better, you can tell it comes from a truthful place and when people have honesty in what they do its really great!

hope you do really well in Edinburgh!

Well I'm currently in Dublin performing at the alaf festival tonight at Panti Bar, and there's a nmber of articles out about me, theres on in Out Northwest, one in Diva and some newspaper stuff in the Lep and the Brighton Argus if any of you are interested, also someone's done a wikipedia page about me.

It's all starting to get a bit weird with so much stuff about me in the press and people recognising me.

A week tonight I'll be doing the first Edinburgh Show, the scotsman piece is out on me in the next few days, Plus some Glossy magazine want to do a feature on me (though I don't know which one, I was just told "a Glossy want to do an interview with you, you up for that?") and there are articles in Scotsgay, Diva and Out Northwest right now.

The Show's written, the flyers have been printed, all 5,000 of them, and everything except my rent in Manchester whilst I'm away has been covered.

Oh and I was voted "worst act at the Glastonbury Festival 2008" by one of the festival forums. Which I signed up to so I could accept graciously.

If anyone knows anyone who's up in Edinburgh during the fringe, please suggest they come see my show, I've only sold 28 tickets so far for the whole run, and it's a 60 seater venue and the show's on for 23 nights. you do the math(s).

I think that guy with the Gay Eskimo act was worse than you. I didn't get him at all, whereas I quite liked your Chorley jokes

Well I'm back from Edinburgh, a lot poorer, but a lot better at what I do, I got a bunch of four star reviews for my show, I'm doing a tour of Finland in February and a couple of gigs in Ireland and the States and I'm doing a one off half hour comedy story on Radio four at some point over the next year.

Also my Mrs asked me to marry her and I said yes.

not wanting to come over all James Blunt, but my life is brilliant.

Bethany

Well the guy's head of comedy at the BBC, and he's coming up to Manchester for a meeting with me. So I'm guessing it'll be with them, as he's suggesting a film I'm guessing it'll be with BBC 2. Unless the script etc end up being really good and they push for theatrical release, though that's unlikely.

Anyway at the moment it's just a meeting about the possibility of how I would feel about that, which then may or may not lead to us writing a first draft, which then may lead to a number of hoops to jump through, which then may lead to a thousand meetings at each one it may get dropped.

If anything is going to come of this, we're looking at a couple of years down the line I'm guessing.

Even so. It's all gone a bit mental :D

Well I'm now credited as an additional material writer on Brendon Burns new DVD "so I suppose This is offensive now?" the show he won the if.comedy award for.

And there's going to be an article on me in the British Comedy Awards programme at this years event on Saturday, which means the whole TV comedy industry will see it. Previous people who've had this were Alan Carr and Russell Brand in the 12 months before they became household names.

Oh and I've a new blog which is on at www.bethanyblack.blogspot.com

Bethany

yes it's on ITV 1.

I've just realised, what I mean is Programme as in big papery thing with writing in it given out to everyone who turns up. not a feature during the awards, that would be silly.
